Mobile Web Content

It is clear that the web is already very mobile and the demand for a better level of service is apparent. Simple copy and page layout considerations can help the Mobile Web Device’s browser present the content in a much more user-friendly format.

“The Mobile Web Initiative's goal is to make browsing the Web from mobile devices a reality”, explains Tim Berners-Lee, W3C Director and inventor of the Web. “W3C and mobile industry leaders are working together to improve Web content production and access for mobile users and the greater Web.”

Quick access of information on the move is obviously useful, especially to distributors, representatives or sales persons.

The most notable difference when browsing a web site on a mobile device is the size of the screen. The built-in browser compensates for this by wrapping text to the width of the screen, so the user does not need to scroll from left to right in order to read one line of text. It is these decisions by the manufacturer that make it possible for users to visit web sites that aren’t authored specifically for Mobile Web Devices.

The web site owner however must make the decision as to whether their web site should have an output format for Mobile Web Devices. This can be done through one proxy or two – either through a separate domain name leaving the main web site still viewable from the Mobile Web Device or alternatively should the main web site be inaccessible through these devices then the user would be redirected to the correct output format automatically through the main domain name.

Primarily the main objective for a web developer is to design clean cut Web sites that conform to accessibility guidelines so that these devices can catch up to the standards set by modern A grade browsers without needing to account for the quirks produced by WYSIWYG editors. While this can be a time consuming process, the benefits are self explanatory
